Google Meet will take AI notes for in-person meetings too

Google has expanded its Gemini AI meeting notetaker beyond Google Meet to cover in-person meetings, Zoom sessions, and Microsoft Teams calls, as first reported by 9to5Google on April 22, 2026. Support for in-person meetings had previously been limited to alpha users on Android only. The feature now also handles impromptu sessions — Google's own support page states users "don't need to be in a meeting room" or a previously-scheduled meeting to activate it.
The cross-platform extension to Zoom and Teams is the tactically interesting part. Google isn't waiting for users to migrate to Meet to access Gemini — it's putting the notetaker inside competitor surfaces. That's distribution logic over ecosystem purity, and it reads as a deliberate reach for install base rather than a bet on lock-in.
What the feature actually is deserves a clear look: a passive, always-available transcription and summarization layer for any meeting, anywhere, including ones that weren't scheduled in advance. That's a deliberately wide aperture for audio capture. The abuse vector here is human — a capable tool that lowers the activation cost for surveillance, selective recording, and consent-free documentation. The risk is people using the tool, not the tool acting on its own.
Google's own attributed text carries no vision-statement prose and no existential-risk framing — it reads as a product changelog, which is mildly to its credit. No marketing phrases worth quarantining. The feature is described functionally: summaries, transcripts, impromptu sessions, transition to video call if a remote participant joins.
